Valuations are based on comparable websites sold in the marketplace. So it is based on actual transactions that have taken place. This is a technique used in "transfer pricing" and equity valuation. It involves finding comparable transactions that have taken place and using them to define the value of a website. By taking the characteristics of the website being valued, such as revenues, type of site, traffic, age, etc, and comparing them to sites of similar characteristics that have been sold to obtain a value. In doing so, we can be reasonably confident that the comparable sites are functionally similar and have similar risks.

In conducting our search for comparables we take a step by step approach to whittling down the transactions of sales to comparable sites, then use the price to earnings (P/E) ratio's of the comparable sites to determine the value of the site being analysed. If the site being compared does not have earnings we use other factors to determine a comparable value.
